Cosmoworlds & Amela Radan

Many women of her age still forgive themselves those small and big fall-downs, they believe that they have time to do what they dream of and that they are still at the beginning. Perhaps that is the truth.

It is also true that this is the story about woman who walked world catwalks, established Fashion Agency Venera, founded and created Sarajevo Fashion Week and magazine Fashion. She also actively engaged at the Institute of education at the Chamber of Commerce.

The list of her activities is truly long.

Everything that she accomplished surprised the most skeptic people, who admired her even they tried to cover it, which is simply human being attribute. What really leave you breathless is that all she managed to do was done in Bosnia and Herzegovina, small country in transition who just escaped war period, with all problems that apply to all societies in transition.

Everything that you have red in this text so far could make you think that she is really ambitious, army trained, strong, very practical and well organized lady who exclusively follows the rule.

Actually she is one gentle woman who would easily cry or smile, whenever she truly feels like it.

She is always trying to make people around her happy, she approaches them with open and clear hart, she notices beauty in small every day things that on first sight could look as less significant but in reality the most important things.

She is mother of two wonderful sons that never gets tired to spend time with them.

She is someone whose friendship is precious and something to cherish. Her energy that came out from nothing else but pure love and passion for what she does.

Her name is Amela Radan.

Out of all her achievements she is the most proud of her harmonized and happy family. Her husband Predrag who gives her unselfish support and with whom she has great relations that someone could only dream about, their two wonderful sons, 13 year old Arijan and ten year old Enej.

“When someone believes in herself and knows her goals, when she walks her way with open hart, with faith in what she does, and in every step she takes she fully gives herself, that is when her dream becomes reality.”

She had dreams about fashion scene in Bosnia that she could not say out loud to anyone but her family. Those who could help and give her chance simply did not understand her or did not pay attention to her ideas and vision. Luckily for all of us who love Bosnian capital Sarajevo, this did not stop her.

“This is the world in which I live and love. Very often I think about fashion as virus. Ones you are contaminated that love and passion is incurable. It is impossible to live any other way”- says Amela.

Mostly thanks to this lady, Bosnia and Herzegovina has its fashion scene. BIH designers presented their collections in fashion centers throughout the world and confirmed their knowledge and creativity. Sarajevo Fashion Week founded by Amela Radan in just five years of existence became institution that opened door of magnificent world of fashion. The enormous energy that Ms. Radan unselfishly transfers into her environment and people around her was so powerful to bring back to life the destroyed fashion scene in Bosnia. She also gave hope and solid support to those close to her in this business.

“Someone has to give its maximum all the time and it will always come back. Human being has the highest value and that should be recognized” this is main motto Amela Radan likes to stress often. The most interesting Amela’s trait is that she always searches for beauty. Pure, undamaged beauty. She uses this trait completely unconsciously as her strongest weapon against everyone else who tries to create obstacles and problems on her way. Simply: she is unstoppable.

Amela worked as hostess during Sarajevo Winter Olympic games in 1984. She has never dreamed about cover magazines and catwalks, but her unusual beauty and charisma had to be noticed. Soon she started to work as model. Beginning of 1990. she left her successful career and straight from the catwalk entered peaceful family life.

Her came back in the fashion world happened in 1996. as Fashion Manager. She founded Fashion Agency Venera; her dream about beauty became reality.

In this Agency she introduced Project of educating youngsters through fashion field and that had significance having in mind post war years when there was very little to offer to our children and young people. Amela took many of young creative people around Europe to show them how fashion capitals function. She showed them the way they should take in order to make their dreams come true.

Amel continued her educative mission in Chamber of BIH Foreign Trade in the field of business dress code.

Sometimes her life became chaos due to her running all the time between the airports, business meetings, and her family on the other side. There are days when she is sleepless, and days that are not long enough. However she functions the best in this creative disorder.

She also founded Fashion magazine “Why not” that became Life Style magazine “Fashion” with introduction of Sarajevo Fashion Week. This way she was able to make strongest relations between Fashion designers, BIH Fashion Industry with world designers. Fashion magazine offers extremely interesting content not only related to the world of fashion.

The most significant achievements of this gentle and beautiful lady with extraordinary energy are in leveling of BIH Fashion scene, directing Fashion Industry businesses, support and affirmation BIH fashion designers, and fashion production.

Main goals were achieved: Fashion scene reached its affirmation in BIH and BIH fashion was recognized in the world. Besides this, Sarajevo Fashion Week, Amela Radan’s deed, continues in affirmation of BIH designers, BiH brands and production, and offers them contact with clients very important for their future development.

Ms. Radan and Sarajevo Fashion Week have made important world fashion names coming to Sarajevo: Alviero Martini, Marianne Haddorn, Verica Rakocevic and many others. They brought the spirit of world fashion centers to Sarajevo accepting at the same time our friendliness and hospitality but also seriousness, authentic and potential of BIH Fashion scene.

“If you ever get chance to participate in Sarajevo Fashion Week use it, since Sarajevo is at the level of London, Paris, Milan, but the feeling that you will experience in Sarajevo is unique”, said Alviero Martini.

Amela Radan gets invitations to attend the most important world fashion events in fashion centers where they recognized her as Fashion revolutionary in the Balkan.

“I am positive that one day I leave fashion world, Sarajevo Fashion Week will continue its existence on solid base that we have built”-said Amela Radan in her speech at the closing event of Spring 2005 Sarajevo Fashion Week that was shown under motto “Life line, heart line, future line.”

Following her own heart line, Mrs. Radan achieved her dreams; Fashion magazine, Sarajevo Fashion Week and SFW Studio Fashion, closed BH Fashion scene circle.

Although it seems that Amela Radan reached the top in her occupation, whoever knows her would say that Amela tries to win the world with BIH beauty.

They also know that she will not stop there. She is full of positive energy and ideas and she does not let ideas go away. She realizes them.

To write news article about great woman that you admire at the same time is not an easy thing to do. From the ocean of interesting and important that Amela had to say, it is hard to choose what is the most interesting and the most important story about this above anything special and different human being who can look behind her and say that her life was not spent for nothing, and her dreams were not placed in long time forgotten draws, covered with the dust.

Nine years of Sarajevo Fashion Week

Although some things could be measured by anniversaries, we have no need for that. All energy that has been invested and all love emitted during all these years cannot be measured at all.

It is evident that we have made Sarajevo recognized as significant center on fashion world map. Sarajevo is capital no different from other fashion metropolis, with Fashion Week events happening twice a year.

We are proud of the fact that for nine years in continuity Fashion Week is magic that connects us with world of beauty and glamour. Everything that was happening in past eight and half years looked like fairy tale at the moments…And the magic of Fashion Week full-fill and takes us every time from the beginning. It is impossible to imagine someone who could be careless and wouldn’t feel special for being part of this magic world.

Uninformed could say that fashion is something superficial, empty and unreal picture.
It is practically art. Otherwise how could we explain feeling of admire while looking at designer’s piece and gracious model wearing the piece. Don’t you think that the famous world designers consider themselves artist at the first place? To create from the bulk of textile impressive sculpture and beauty; it is talent that only few posses.
The biggest world fashion names were not only privilege for famous European fashion centers; many of them participated at Sarajevo Fashion Week and paid respect to Sarajevo audience.

The most important fact is that citizens of Sarajevo would still suffer in hunger for fashion events and others would live in ignorance if there was no enthusiasm, endless energy and persistency sometimes conceding with stubborn, all in one person: Ms. Amela Radan.

It is amazing that only few people besides Mr. and Mrs. Radan are carrying out this huge project of Sarajevo Fashion Week. Their efforts, endless work and personal contribution within the team of SFW resulted with Sarajevo being acknowledged as fashion center. Recommendations for professionalism and quality of SFW were given from the very beginning from all over the world. Therefore most famous Holland designers, famous names of French fashion, Italian designer who designs for world known stars and many other names from Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Pakistan, Nigeria etc, are coming to Sarajevo to present their work and collections. Would they come if they haven’t got confirmation of high level quality of professionalism and quality. Considering social and economic frame in Bosnia and Herzegovina this is extreme success.

But as in anything else the hardest thing is to get the confirmation of your value in your own environment.

The whole story has completely different dimension since the work is done under difficult economic and social conditions.

Far back in 1996 Studio SFW team was engaged actively in creating fashion scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And we literally think “creating” since fashion scene was almost dead due to four years of war time period. At the beginning of this process we worked with cutest models ever – our little models, children. Many of them grew up and stayed with Studio SFW and the Agency years after. Today they are TV journalists in local and world media, speakers, VIPs, winners of state or world beauty contests, successful students, family people, etc.

Many our young models and designers have left Bosnia and Herzegovina and traveled throughout Europe, to Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France, and other continents such as Africa, Asia, visiting Thailand, Bangkok, Nairobi, Manila, etc. We were led by our enthusiasm in trying to make true professionals out of pool of young people. In Sarajevo these days you cannot find any successful model that has not passed through our school of modeling.

Studio SFW and Amela Radan enjoyed confidence of most eminent world Fashion’s Agencies, such as Ford, Metropolitan, Miss Earth, Elite, and has excellent business relations with their Regional Agents.

We funded Sarajevo Fashion Week since April 2000. It was completely new experience for all of us to organize for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, fashion event at such level. Many models for the first time experienced real content of modeling job and have taken their first steps on the catwalk thanks to Fashion Week.
Besides BIH models, there were models from other countries – Iva Radic Balaban, Danijela Alavanja, Iris Androsevic, Jasmina Hadagha, as well as world top models these days Andrijana Dejanovic, Jelena Bosancic, Ford’s top model Carolina Viciana, and mail top model Adnan Taletovic. For the first time we had teams of make up artists, hair-dressers and hostesses, professionally engaged and for all of them it was great opportunity to be part of the manifestation organized on highest level, professional level that equals same world manifestations. Today we have top model Dji Dieng known for her active role in humanitarian activities.

Sarajevo Fashion Week was funded not only to place city of Sarajevo side by side to fashion metropolis centers, but at the first place to introduce competitiveness at the domestic market, initiate the development of textile industry, and create opportunity for young designers to show their work and talent and for well known designers establish business contacts and present their work outside of BiH, attending fashion fairs and events around the world.

Jasna Hadzimehmedovic Bekric, whose work was connected to Studio SFW from her first collection, was able to present her work in Croatia, Germany and Kenya.
Minja Stjepanovic presented her graduation collection in Zurich, Naples and Island.
Aleksandra Lovric presented her collection in Athens.
Ata Omerbasic was presented in Croatia, Island and Germany.
Nermina Varesanovic attended textile fair in Paris.
Gordana Zucic whose real beginning was at Sarajevo Fashion Week presented her collection in Manila, Philippines.
Amna Kunovac Zekic, who had presented her work in 1996 in Paris and Düsseldorf, was invited again to Germany.
Irma Saje, Adnan Hajrulahovic, Ata Omerbasic, Emina and Nermina Hodzic, Nermina Varesanovic, Selma Kronje… attended Düsseldorf, Paris and Belgrade Textile Fair in Studio SFW and GTZ organization.

The majority of them went the road from their first collection shown during Sarajevo Fashion Week to well established designers and owners of Gallery or Workshop.

Emina Husedzinovic and Dragica Gudeljevic BIH began their first presentations during Sarajevo Fashion Week.

We are very proud of the fact that special attention is paid to our young and not yet established BiH designers. For all of them it is huge step to be able to present their collections and work at this manifestation with such high criteria, but also step that helps their future existence.

Also our goal is to strengthen significance of domestic textile industry and therefore we promote BiH brands and textile companies during Sarajevo Fashion Week.
All these years Borac Travnik, Pavone, Granoff, Kras, etc present their collections.

What makes us proud is international character of our manifestation and cooperation with many organizations (e.g. GTZ and SIPPO) and embassies. Sarajevo Fashion Week hosted many models and designers from the Region, Europe and the whole world.

Since 2000 the audience in Sarajevo saw collections of famous designers such as Marianne Hadorn, Simone Hauz, Silla Real, from Switzerland, Frans Molenaar, Addy van den Krommenacker, Percy Irasquin, Katrin Neyer, from Holland, Christian Aadnevik from England, John Kaveke, Kenya, Lars Frederick Huild from Germany, Jan Taminiau from Belgium, Alviero Martini from Italy, Agatha Luiz de la Prada, Isabel Ardevol from Spain, Eymeric Francois, Christophe Josse, Lillian Aulie Schjoll, Sakina M’sa, Reinaldo Alvarez, Irakli Nasidze, Tilmann Grawe, Katherine Pradeau, Karin Bonnet, from France, etc. We have to remember many established designers and young talented designers from the South East European Region (www.fashionweek.ba/foreign designers).

During last Fashion Week in May 2008 great Holland designer Addy van den Krommenacker presented his famous glamorous collection « Ode to a woman »l that was much appreciated in Milan and Paris as well. This wonderful designer repeated his presentation following night due to enormous interest of the audience. Comments that came from all South-East European Region, unanimously gave highest marks for this show.

One more time Sarajevo Fashion Week proves its leading role in this Region.

Every Sarajevo Fashion Week has its own specifics and warmness, and joy because of new meetings, friendships or repeated encounters; has glamorous aura that makes everything more exiting and sparkling. There is always satisfaction for the job well done and satisfaction of being surrounded by friends.

Sarajevo Fashion Week became important and recognizable brand that many manifestations in Sarajevo tried to adopt without paying attention to how much work and responsibility someone needs to invest to justify use of Sarajevo Fashion Week name. That is why we can see many fashion weeks in BIH these days, and those organizers conscienceless about international character as must have for such manifestations.

Only Sarajevo Fashion Week has justified this name shared with other world fashion metropolis. During First Sarajevo Fashion Week we had hosted 16 countries, and we were incorporated to calendars of world fashion events, as recommendation by famous designers. That is why we became European Festival of Design.

Sarajevo Fashion Week became institution is covered by famous BIH media, Region and world media. Still has its magic that cannot be transferred to the outside world no matter how long you speak or write about it.

It is really hard to catch on the paper everything that Sarajevo Fashion Week is and what will become. There are too much memories, impressions and facts. Therefore one can’t easily express Sarajevo Fashion Week’s essence and magnitude. It is hard to realize for someone who is not completely devoted to it. Even for far better writers can be difficult to explain magic by words.

One thing is for sure: Sarajevo Fashion Week continues on its way. Persistently, devotedly with love, writes pages of fashion history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Sarajevo Fashion Week - European Festival of Design will be held November 27 to December 2, 2008.
